There are dictionaries, and then there is THE dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary is the ultimate guide to the English language. It’s history is fascinating, as documented in the excellent book, the Professor and the Madman. This weekend’s New York Times Magazine brought us an update on the great linguistic lexicon. Oxford University Press has said there are no plans for any future printings of the dictionary. All future updates, it appears, will be applied only to the online version of the dictionary. We have truly entered the digital age.
