Is diplomacy dead?
There’s a reason that Dohiyi Mir sits on the blog roll, providing easy access for all you Impatient Sufferers and it’s not just because NTodd blogs from my home state of Vermont. He is sometimes so biting and concise that I can do little more than tip my hat and post a quick hit, so I recommend you check out his take on this AP story.
There is no reason our nation, and in particular our nation’s top diplomat should not be looking for help in finding a path to peace in Israel and Palestine. Though Hamas has been responsible for many terrible things, they also do have popular support from their people and therefore could be an important partner towards a peace.
If one of our primary aspirations is towards greater equality, we must consider peace a goal that goes hand in hand with that. War is the ultimate state of inequality, where the mightier wins, killing the weaker person. It should be the last resort, if a resort at all. If we don’t want preemptive war, we must embrace diplomacy, not shun and discourage it.
