Long Trail Brewery, one of Vermont’s largest and most successful microbreweries has announced that it will power it’s brewery with an unusual source of energy.

Long-Trail Brewing Co. plans to sign a contract to become the largest commercial customer of Central Vermont Public Service’s “Cow-Power” program. The announcement on Tuesday is timed for Earth Day.

VPS works with farmers to install special equipment that uses methane gas that’s given off by manure to generate electricity.

There are many ways of generating energy besides burning traditional fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Though methods such as solar generation are more ecologically sound, it is wonderful to see small businesses embracing alternatives. In a bucolic state such as Vermont, it is good to see a move to make something of the waste from the farms.

Long Trail is showing us that we can make something valuable from our waste, even from a pile of crap.
