Unfortunately Penn is just one of a number of campaign consultants the Democrats seem to love to hire. Bob Shrum, Mark Penn and their ilk have for too long been our go to guys.
The even larger issue is that they believe the party should follow popular opinion than lead it. I’d argue that the Democrats should work to shift public opinion towards being in favor of sensible progressive policies. It’s how the Republicans have successfully moved towards their policy goals.
Penn and Shrum and the rest put the candidates first and the policies second and that’s why we are loosing ground. We need to win, but on the issues, not just an election.
